Astoria, Queens

Incorporated in 1836, Astoria was known for its nurseries and botanical gardens, which fed the floral market in New York City. Dry alkali and gutta percha (similar to rubber, and used for insulation) factories were located here, along with carpet manufacturers. Ferries linked Astoria to the city.
