Prospero Bonarelli (1580–1659)
Il Solimano [Süleyman]
Florence: P. Cecconelli, 1620
NYPL, Spencer Collection

In 1620, a century after Süleyman I, “the Magnificent” (r. 1520–66), began his rule in Istanbul, the Italian author Prospero Bonarelli devoted an elaborate fictional drama to the Ottoman sultan. This etching portrays a scene in which Süleyman, at center stage, faces the audience in splendid robes. The drama suggests the fame of Süleyman I beyond his borders, as well as the European and Russian fascination with him and his exotic court.
