Shown here is the embassy – in colorful and exotic Muscovite caftans and hats – sent by Ivan the Terrible (r. 1533–84) to the court of the Holy Roman Emperor Maxmilian II (r. 1564–76). Several members of the embassy clutch bunches of neatly arrayed furs as diplomatic gifts.
