The French expedition to Egypt, led by the young, ambitious general Napoleon Bonaparte (First Consul, 1799–1804; Emperor, 1804–14/15), was an instance of the French Revolution's spread beyond the confines of Europe. While unsuccessful in its military goal of stopping England's increasing predominance in the eastern Mediterranean, did contribute to the spread of nationalist and liberal – i.e., modern –ideas to the Ottoman empire. It also enhanced Europe's interest in the history and culture of ancient Egypt.
