  The Treaty of Westphalia (1648)

The Treaty of Westphalia ended the Thirty Years' War (1618–48) and established the main lines of the international political regime for the remaining century and a half of Old Regime Europe. It recognized Protestantism on a par with Roman Catholicism—and the right of every sovereign to establish his chosen denomination as the official religion in his realm.
