As the Russians were moving into eastern
Siberia in the middle of the 17th century, the Manchus rose in
power in Manchuria. Having conquered all other tribes and ruled
over all Manchuria, they moved toward China proper and crossed
the Great Wall. In 1644 Emperor Shunzhi (r. 1638–61) entered
Beijing and founded the Qing dynasty, which would rule China
until 1912.
