[The Costume of the Allied Armies in Paris in the Year 1815]
[Paris, 1816]
NYPL, Spencer Collection

Of all the allied armies that marched into France, none was as ethnically diverse as Russia’s. Conscripts from throughout the vast empire, many in their native dress, were a remarkable sight on the boulevards of occupied Paris. The fierce Kalmyk horseman shown in this hand-colored engraving was one of many such exotic peoples, with his pelt-adorned saddle, and his yurt home in the background.
