This design for a medal commemorates both the triumph of Russia
over Napoleon and the victor’s European “civility.” Here, the Russian
conqueror, his vanquished foes littering the field behind him, offers
a symbol of peace to the kneeling personification of the subjugated
city of Paris. The encircling caption suggests that justice has been
done, as “The Fire of Moscow will be extinguished in the walls of Paris.”
