	After Ivan Andreevich Tessing (Jan Tessing) (d. 1701) Zertsalo greshnago [A Mirror for the Sinner] [Russia, late 18th–early 19th century] NYPL, Slavic and Baltic Division This woodblock print, based on an earlier original by the Dutch engraver and printer Jan Tessing, suggests the cultural divide between Russia’s europeanized elites and the broader society. On one side of the print, shown here, are images from the life of man, depicting good and evil, death, the brevity of life, and the suffering of the sinner. On the reverse, are figures in luxurious European dress representing Adam and Eve and original sin. Printed on a single sheet of cheap paper and folded into a small book, such edifying graphics were distributed far and wide in the provinces and cities by itinerant peddlers.
