The suburban estate of Kuskovo near Moscow belonged to the wealthiest aristocrat of Catherine’s time, Count Petr Sheremetev (1713–1788), who was famous for his luxurious lifestyle and love of art. His estate included a palace, church, Italian house, Dutch house, theater, hermitage, grotto, orangerie, and enormous French park.
