John Augustus Atkinson’s panoramic views of St. Petersburg were published in London with a dedication to Catherine the Great’s beloved grandson, Emperor Alexander I (r. 1801–25). Atkinson drew these views in the 1790s from the cupola of the Kunstkamera, one of the highest towers in the city.
