John Ogilby (1600–1676)
Asia, the first part. Being an accurate description of Persia. The Vast Empire of the Great Mogol
London: the author, 1673
NYPL, General Research Division

This scene represents the magnificence of the Mughal court in India, with its fountains, gardens, palaces, and pavilions. In the background, contesting behemoths entertain the shah, and visiting diplomats or governors prostrate themselves before the emperor, seated on his throne. A menagerie of animals, exotic to Russians and most Europeans, heads along an avenue fronting Delhi, the capital city. John Ogilby borrowed this etching for part one of his book.
