Fedor Litke’s circumnavigation of the globe on
the sloop Seniavin was notable for its scientific and
geographical discoveries, as well as for descriptions
of native peoples and their ways of life. The Kaloshes
of Sitka Island (Alaska) were of particular interest
to Litke and to the naturalists Aleksandr Postels (1801–1871)
and Friedrich Heinrich von Kittlitz (1799–1874),
who provided the illustrations. In his caption for this
interior scene, Kittlitz explains that the “solidity
and elegance” of the yurt dwelling reflected the
influence of the nearby Russian colony.
