Difference among living things has been studied and recorded from
the Roman works of Pliny the Elder through the bestiaries of the Middle
Ages and the science of Gregor Mendel and Charles Darwin. Much of
the record of this research can be found in the collections of the
New York Public Library. A major emphasis on protection of the environment
in recent collecting at the Science Industry and Business Library
is reflected in the focus of this Smithsonian Institution exhibit.
The books, journals and electronic resources identified throughtout
this exhibit are only an indication of the wealth of information available
at SIBL which can enlighten and inform the user about this diverse
planet and the necessity for protecting that diversity.
