Close-Ups in The Vincent Astor Gallery

Romeo & Juliet and
West Side Story

The section opens with a display of annotated scripts, screenplays and scores for Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. Images of Verona's tragic lovers will include watercolors by E. H. Sothern of the production in which he co-starred with Julia Marlowe and designs by Eugene Berman for Antony Tudor's ballet. The doomed participants in more recent adaptations are also featured. Designs, photographs and rehearsal notes by Jerome Robbins represent the Broadway and film versions of West Side Story, which is set in the area that is now Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The exhibit ends with photographs documenting the original and transformed facilities of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
