Ala Gertner
Letter to Sala Garncarz, in German, Bendsburg, Poland, September 24, 1941
NYPL, Dorot Jewish Division, Sala Garncarz Kischner Collection

After a year at Geppersdorf, Sala was given a three-day “vacation” to visit her family. Ala was on leave in Sosnowitz at the same time, and stayed on in the city after she secured a position with the Judenrat, the local Jewish Council. Here, she addresses the letter to “Sarenka, you silly girl,” and apologizes for not having spent more time with her in Sosnowitz.
