Meierberg was a well-traveled diplomat in the service of the Holy Roman Emperor, Leopold I (r. 1658–1705). In 1661 he entered Moscow, seeking support against the Ottoman sultan. Depicted here is his last audience with Tsar Aleksei (r. 1645–76) in the Kremlin in 1662.
