The renowned Safavid ruler Shah 'Abbas the Great (r. 1587-1628) of Persia gave the costly throne pictured here to Tsar Boris Godunov (r. 1598-1605). Artisans in Persia had encased the base and legs of the throne with figured gold sheets encrusted with turquoise, tourmalines, and pearls, and they bejeweled the finials on the corners of the throne.
