In 1697, Austrian forces under Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736) soundly defeated the Ottoman attempt to retake Hungary, which they had lost a decade before. The Ottoman Empire lost its foothold in central Europe, and its defeat reflected its slow decline as an imperial power.
