Harry Haubenstock
Letter to Sala Garncarz, in German, Dyhernfurth, Germany, March 1, 1943
NYPL, Dorot Jewish Division, Sala Garncarz Kischner Collection
In March 1943, by which time there was only limited postal service into the
labor camps, Harry enclosed the photograph of himself and Sala in a letter.
The Czech overseer so admired Harry’s eloquence and perfect German that
she allowed this last letter from Harry to be delivered to Sala. The photo “is
the most precious thing I own,” he writes, and he wishes her a happy
birthday. He ends, “I remain yours eternally. Harry.”
