Ala Gertner
Letter to Sala Garncarz, in German, Bendsburg, Poland, October 16, 1941
NYPL, Dorot Jewish Division, Sala Garncarz Kischner Collection

Despite her transfer from Sosnowitz to Bendsburg, Ala continued to see Sala’s family in Sosnowitz when she visited her own sick mother. In this note, as in many others, Ala reflects fondly on the time she and Sala spent in Geppersdorf. She encourages Sala to have patience and writes energetically on the back of the letter, “It’s good that you have a job! Send me a certificate right away that you have been working there [Geppersdorf] for a year.” Ala thought that such a document could help her arrange another leave for Sala.
