A Record of the People
For visitor and native alike, New York’s
unstoppable energy radiates from its people. Freed
from the confines of cars, they pour through the
streets to see and be seen. Crowds pictured
in the postcards suggest the never-ending dance
on the pavements at the century’s cusp. Their
postures and clothes capture a taste of the time
that can feed the imaginations of novelists, historians,
costume designers, filmmakers, and family chroniclers
trailing the stories of their forefathers and foremothers.
