"Please, Sir, I want some more” is arguably the best-remembered line from the Dickens canon. This pathetic plea is uttered by Oliver Twist, the eponymous hero of Dickens’s second novel. It was a departure from The Pickwick Papers in its bold social satire and vivid evocation of London’s seamy side. With its robust characters, it lent itself handily to onstage action and atmosphere. It is likely today that more people around the world know Oliver Twist from having seen Lionel Bart’s musical Oliver! than from having read the book.

Lionel Bart's musical Oliver! opened in New York January 6, 1963 and played 774 performances.
