A Christmas Carol, The Reading.
A later opening from the prompt-copy of A Christmas Carol, heavily marked up by Dickens with cuts, interpolations and directions for vocal expression ("Tone down to Pathos" ... "Up to cheerfulness"). The scene, from stave III of the Carol, is the Christmas celebration at the home of Scrooge's nephew Fred, to which the old miser has been transported by the Ghost of Christmas Present.
