Opera in America reflected European trends, as can be seen in this cartoon. Captioned "The decline of Italian opera in NY -- will it have to go a-begging?," the drawing amusingly depicts the impact of the newly popular Wagnerian works on the Italian opera characters. The maestro in the cartoon is Luigi Arditi, the major Italian opera conductor of the period.
