Helen Potter, considered one of the major elocutionists of the later 19th century, wrote textbooks on elocution and recitation; taught in New York and New England; and toured for James Redpath's agency after 1874. Potter presented readings, original lectures and imitations of well-known actors and lecturers of the day, including Lawrence Barrett, Sarah Bernhardt, Adelaide Ristori, Charlotte Cushman, and John B.
