Heading West: Mapping the Territory was curated by Alice C. Hudson, Chief of the Map Division, of the Humanities and Social Sciences Library.

Alice C. Hudson would like to extend personal thanks to Web Wheelock, Map Division volunteer, whose words, guidance, and good humor kept me on the right track. Thanks also to Map Division staff members Stephan Saks, for research support throughout the preparation of the exhibit, and Nancy Kandoian and Tom Bourke, for their technical support and patience. Thanks also to the antiquarian mapping community across the Internet, especially the members of the Maphist mailing list, who never failed to answer my calls for assistance in navigating my uncharted pathway through the maps of the West.

For their invisible but invaluable support, without which the curator would have gone south, instead of west, thanks and praise go to Research Coordinators Jeanne Bornstein and Meg Maher and their colleagues in the Exhibitions Program Office: Susan Rabbiner, Manager; Myriam de Arteni, Exhibitions Conservator; Caryn Gedell, Associate Registrar; and Russell Drisch, Installation Coordinator.

To Marc Blaustein and Suzanne Doig of the Graphics Office and Ann Antoshak for the artistry of their graphic design, which gave vision and voice to the exhibition graphics, publications, and website, the curator offers thanks; and to Barbara Bergeron of the Publications Office, my gratitude for her way with words. To exhibition designer Stephen Saitas, a salute for his awareness of institutional and curatorial quirks, and his creativity and grace in designing "the West."

No exhibition is the product of a lone curator, or even a team. My deepest gratitude goes to the research collections of The New York Public Library, which over the past two years have taught me so much about the history of the American West.
