William Douglass, M.D.
"North America . . ." In: A Summary, Historical and Political, of the First Planting, Progressive Improvements, and Present State of the British Settlements in North-America
Boston and London, 1755
Slaughter 3019

This map, published by Thomas Jefferys, is one of a flurry of cartographic publications in this one year, in answer to various French maps and supposed French encroachments on English turf. The yellow highlights clearly show, for propaganda purposes, the looming French presence on the rich fur-bearing western and northern frontiers. The minimal Spanish claim in Florida is barely worth a mention. Douglass's work, while criticized by some, has been described as very, very influential on successive writers.
