An original pencil drawing by F.W. Pailthorpe, executed for his 1885 set of etchings illustrating Dickens's Great Expectations.
This variant frontispiece shows Pip as he is leaving the humble village of his birth for London to begin his proper education as a "young fellow with great expectations." Sobbing, he lays his hand on the signpost at the end of the village, and says, "Good-bye, O my dear, dear friend!" Abandoned children and orphans like Pip are everywhere in Dickens's work.
