In 1824, while his father was in the Marshalsea debtor's prison, a back-attic was found for Dickens at the house (shown here in the foreground) of an insolvent court agent. He, his wife, and grown son live on "very pleasantly," as John Forster observed, as the Garland family in The Old Curiosity Shop.
