"This great Magician." "Dickens invoking the Spirit of Father Christmas," an original pen-and-ink drawing by "Kyd." Dickens's death moved even the satirists to eulogy. On June 25, 1870, the London Tomahawk ("Our duty is but to tear and rend") published a moving tribute, which closed: "And he has gone! This great Magician of the pen has gone. Writing to the last--good, noble words, fighting to the last against Evil and Sham. He has gone forever, leaving us to mourn for him; leaving us to sigh as we discover in the Shadow of Death, The Mystery of Edwin Drood."
