Mrs. Gamp startles "Phiz" in his studio.
This autograph document of authentication, signed "Hablot K. Browne" at bottom, accompanies the 40 watercolor drawings--copies of his original etchings for Martin Chuzzlewit--which were executed in 1866 by "Phiz" for the collector Frederick William Cosens. The document is embellished in its upper part with an original drawing by Browne showing the artist interrupted in the painting of a portrait of Pecksniff by the sudden appearance of Mrs. Gamp, armed of course with her famous umbrella.
