George Cruikshank's pencil, pen, and
watercolor sketch for "The Last Chance" shows Bill Sikes attempting
to escape from the angry mob surrounding a thieves' hideout on
Jacob's Island. The illustration—pasted into a copy of volume
3 of the 1838 book edition—was translated into set designs
for theatrical adaptations of the novel.
