The Last Chance
The New York Public Library, Berg Collection of English and American Literature

George Cruikshank's pencil, pen, and watercolor sketch for "The Last Chance" shows Bill Sikes attempting to escape from the angry mob surrounding a thieves' hideout on Jacob's Island. The illustration—pasted into a copy of volume 3 of the 1838 book edition—was translated into set designs for theatrical adaptations of the novel.
